Georgians are proud of winemaking tradition stretched back to the early Iron Age.
Many of the unearthed silver, gold and bronze artifacts of the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC bear chased imprints of the vine, grape clusters and leaves. The fertile valleys and protective slopes of the Transcaucasia were home to grapevine cultivation and Neolithic wine production for at least 8,000 years.
Among the well-known winemaking regions of Georgia, Kakheti, Kartli, Imereti and Rach-Lechkhumi are the most popular.
Acquaintance with the Georgian wine starts from Tbilisi; the famous statue of “Tamada” – a toast master located in old town, inspiring to explore the wine routs of the capital. The trip covers Kakheti province, east Georgia – the main wine producing region, continues to west in search of different grapes sorts. It’s obvious that due to varied micro-zones the color the tartness, the aroma bouquet as well as method of cultivation and fermentation technology differs;
It is also worth to admit, that in Kakheti, vineyards are spread on lowlands and valleys, while in Imereti, Racha and Guria vineyards are cultivated in gorges and on the slopes of the mountains.
Taste natural and endemic wines directly from clay jar “Qvevri” –listed in UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list.

Breakfast at hotel. With glass of wine greet famous statue of “Tamada” at old town, start cheerful sightseeing of cross-cultures, religions, ancient history. After must-see follows must-drink, so enjoy visits at numerous local wine bars & restaurants. Explore the treasures of Georgia at the National Museum and learn more about the viniculture and artifacts dated back 8000 years. Visit Agricultural University of Georgia and take part in brief seminar about the technologies and key prospective of wine making lead by local experts and oenologists. Dinner, will be served at wine restaurant with bio wines, exotic cuisine and polyphonic songs. Overnight at hotel.
The Cradle of Wine – Kakheti
Breakfast at hotel. Wine tour to Kakheti region, famous for vineyards and wine producing villages. Visit 11th century Alaverdi cathedral, observe the monastery’s wine cellar with ancient “Qvevri” (clay jar), tasting of wines and discussion with monastery winemaker. A short break to a very special place and observe the methods of “Qvevri” making. Visit couple of family wineries and explore the Soviet times tunnels cellar, where nowadays authentic wine tours and tastings are offered. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Kvareli.
Ancient Wine Cellars
Breakfast at hotel. Visit ruins of 5th century wine cellar and small basilica located in archaeological site, walk in vineyards, excursion around the winery and tasting of white and red dry wines. Heading to 16th-17th century Gremi architectural complex and enjoy wine and Georgian brandy tasting at local chateau. Excursion to 18th century Sighnaghi royal town, wine-session at Tibaani vineyards and tasting organic wines. Transfer to Tbilisi. Overnight at hotel.
Wines & Wineries of Kartli Region
Breakfast at hotel. Excursion to Mtskheta, UNESCO heritage site dated from 3rd century BC. Brief visit at 6th century Jvari monastery overlooking Mtskheta. Tasting “Qvevri” wines at family winery nearby Mtskheta with *optional visit to the vineyards. Following the trials of artifacts, wine tour continues to 1st-4th century AD Dzalisa archaeological site, a Roman town with 2nd century AD impressive, 12 color mosaic depicting Dionysus – the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine. Visit nearby chateau to taste premium Georgian wines made by European technology. Trip continues to Gori, town being famous as a birth place of J. Stalin. Excursion to Uplistsikhe rock-hewn city from 1st millennium BC, where excavations revealed the seeds of the grape from ancient times. Transfer to Kutaisi, west Georgia. Dinner at authentic restaurant with Imeretian wine. Overnight at hotel.
Endemic Wines of Highland - Racha
Breakfast at hotel. Wine exploration leads to Racha mountainous region. Unlike Kakheti, Racha only has vineyards on a small territory providing quality grapes and wines. Almost all types of grapes in Racha are endemic. Vineyards are mainly located in the gorge of Rioni River.; the most famous “Khvanchkara” micro-zone locates in lower Racha. After Shaori Lake and 12th century Nikortsminda cathedral, visit family wineries for Racha wines and ham tasting. Trip continues to Martvili forspecial dinner with organic wines. Overnight at hotel.
Wineries and Farms of Guria
Breakfast at hotel. Depart to Guria an interesting region for wine-lovers, where vineyards are mostly cultivated in the river gorges and on the slopes. Among the Georgian varieties the most popular sorts are Tsolikauri and Chkhaveri – harvested in late November, even December. Guria preserves the rarest craft of the traditional “Qvevri” making.. Along the tour visit local wineries, taste “Qvevri” wines and homemade honey “Chacha”. Walk in farms and vineyards and explore much more. Transfer to Kutaisi. Visit Bagrati cathedral built in 1003. Free evening for own arrangements. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Breakfast at hotel. Excursion to 12th century Gelati monastery and the former academy. Depart to Tbilisi. Visit the small bio-winery and vineyards of female winemaker and taste delicious organic wines. Arrive in Tbilisi.
