The Absheron Peninsula, part of Baku city, is saturated with oil, Here natural gas escaped into the atmosphere and burns to create the flaming hillsides that have been awe-inspiring to prophets and visitors alike. It is said that Prophet Zoroaster spent 20 year living in a cave lit by supernatural flame. The temple where the first pilgrim came to worship can still be paid homage to today.
Baku was also home to the worlds first oil well, which was drilled in 1846. The first refinery, established by the Nobel brothers started production here in 1871. At this time, Baku was the worlds largest oil producer barons.
